Although many reviews say it's a great alternative to the kit lens I'm not so sure having compared it to it. After testing this lens in many situations with a Nikon D600 full frame camera and a D7200 crop camera, I didn't find anything special about this lens other than good bokeh. I didn't really feel like the D7200 was superior to an unused kit lens I dug out of the closet (Nikkor 55-200 set to 80mm equivalent focal length) in terms of sharpness at any aperture, and the Autofocus wasn't as good as this kit lens. Results were better on the D600, but both cameras lacked sharpness and autofocus is clearly a work in progress. (No, I didn't put a whale lens on the D600). You might get better results with manual focus, but this lens just isn't sharp. That said, with a little effort you can get some interesting photos, but you get what you pay for and saving for something better is probably your best bet.
