Review on D Link 8 Port Gigabit Desktop DGS 1008G by Jonathan Yang

Revainrating 5 out of 5

D-Link, have been using it for years, all my home infrastructure

I've been using D-Link since I bought my first 5-port Gigabit Ethernet switch in 1997 for high-speed Internet access. 3com was a big boy back then, but a gigabit switch was very expensive. D-Link was affordable and that's how my relationship with them started. The first switch I bought from them had a fan and the fan failed after a few years which was painful but I lived with it until it died. I never replaced the fan but never encountered any issues where the fan stopped working so I guess I was fine and the fan was an extra precaution. My eventual replacement, an 8-port Gigabit switch, was the same model but without a fan. I still have it today and use it for small LAN parties and such and it still works great. Bought a 24 port for SOHO use, hated the fan noise (it was meant for a server rack so I threw it away. Bought another 24 port (fanless) a few years later and still use it with no problems Bought a 16 port fanless for my wiring closet - have been using it since 2003 no problem.. would keep using it.. needed a switch for a work area in the garage and bought it.. it was removable so i could get it out btw.. preferred the old one to look like a rectangular box (I don't mark it for that) The problem with the sleep view is that you can't put anything on it - it slides right off, but this is a desktop switch, 5 ports, so this may be the case but looks pretty sturdy It came with the device and power adapter that uses the same voltage/amp as one of my phone chargers The speed on my wired network is good - very satisfied and ku I would eat it again.

Pros
  • Rugged design
Cons
  • No automatic
