Review on Freenove Raspberry Crawling Detailed Tutorial by Bob Ramthun

Power option is terrible

Okay first let me say that I'm good at Arduino, Raspberry Pi, RC cars/trucks and have built many quadcopters with parts from Revain. It's so easy to say this isn't my first rodeo. The design and fit/finish of this product is very good. Haven't found a bad servo yet, but am not done yet (see below). The controller is a proprietary Arduino board based on the Arduino 2560 Mega. (According to documentation) Has outputs for 18 servos. Sweet. Right? Well, something like that. Most I/O pins are missing, so you're somewhat limited in what you can do. The biggest gripe is that the power required is IMR 14500 batteries, basically 3.6V AA. You need two of these. Not included. Why? Because the industry has realized that most people don't pay attention to the voltage on the battery side. You stop them. Here you will find several non-rechargeable versions and two. Yes. Two rechargeable options. So after 130 euros you have to buy a branded battery for another 30-40 euros and a charger. Batteries that are not interchangeable with anything else I have. I have several dozen batteries that easily fit the bill. Why even put a battery holder on this thing? Why not have a terminal where I could hook something up and figure it out myself. Well I've thought about it, but the company that offers this doesn't provide any specs or schematics for the board. No pinout, apart from a poor quality silkscreen on the board. At this point I would not recommend it to anyone because it is so close to a 5 star product. Very cool when you don't turn on the power. Edit 10/22/19: Support provided me with a schematic. Unfortunately, given the high current involved, there can't be a simple solution that doesn't require redesigning the board.

Pros
  • Requires 18650 battery -> See "AboutBattery.pdf" in the downloaded file to purchase.
Cons
  • Vulgarity
