I recently bought a house that was built in 1974. I'm not sure when the tile in the kitchen was installed, but judging by the horrible dark stains that are absolutely impossible to remove from the grout, I think they've been there for quite some time. I've tried different methods of applying paint and then cleaning the tiles, and I have some advice for those tackling a project like mine. If you are trying to cover a very dark stained unsealed old grout like mine it will take two coats for full coverage. However, the water/scrub method of removing excess paint will not work. If moisture does not get on the paint, then everything will turn out much smoother. You will spend an ungodly amount of time eliminating arthritis in your knees, back and neck and developing early arthritis. What works best for me is to apply a coat of paint to 6-8 tiles and wipe off the excess with your finger as you go. I wore latex gloves and this seemed to help ease the mess and create a nice clean line. I put on my colored pants to quickly wipe the excess off my finger. Because the paint dries quickly, I found that the grout I started with was dry enough for a second coat by the time I was done with 6-8 tiles. When applying the second layer I was much more careful to stay in the lines. This sped up the work compared to applying the first layer. I found I had more work to do than I started by following the directions, painting the grout, letting it dry for 30-60 minutes, then spraying it with water and wiping off the excess. The water washed some of the paint off the grout, forcing me to go through the entire process from start to finish to fix the dark spots. My fingernail turned out to be the most effective tile paint remover out of all the crazy things I've tried. After most of my fingernails broke, I knew I had to find a better way. Get some knee pads and take frequent breaks to stretch or you're going to be in quite a bit of pain when you have a project as big as mine. It would also be helpful to give yourself 3-5 days to finish if possible. I did my best to keep my sanity! I'm a little concerned that the color will stand out when I mop the floor later. However, so far so good. 4 stars so far. UPDATE - It's been 2 years since I painted over the grout. It looks terrible and I am currently looking for a solution other than installing a new floor. I have a dog and cat whose claws did a great job of peeling the paint off. It also lifts slightly after you pet it. I would like to leave it alone or go away with a dark color. Buyers be careful when using this place with heavy traffic or turn lights to dark!
