What an upgrade! - Network and cable tester

My 20 year old cable tester was starting to drive me crazy. It would tell me the cables are ok, but after connecting them I would see problems. It was very easy to use and has tested thousands upon thousands of cables for me over the years. But the false positives meant I had to replace it. My old device will only connect if the plugs are connected properly, no broken wires etc. This device has so many features including POE that I'm looking forward to trying it out, although on the warning label POE+ (48V) compared to old ones 24v says - The sticker says not to try more than 20v and it just doesn't make sense to me. Hence one star for that. However, the number of functions in this relatively small device is huge. Length, measure where the break is, and you can easily determine where the cable goes on a patch panel or switch. This would have saved me a lot of time with previous diagnostic problems. In particular, the ability to detect breaks in individual wires. Another feature that I hope will be really useful is the ability to identify exactly which wire is broken or misconnected. My old block was all about pairs - it's a bit deeper and will definitely be helpful. The display will show you which wires are "crossed" or missing, but of course not which end of the cable has the problem. Being able to find one wire among hundreds is a great feature. I haven't tested how easy it is to spot a cable out of 20 if you have the kit, but if you have everything in the patch panel it should be very easy to see which port the cable goes to. very large carrying case - seems made for the "big brother" of this device. But at least I know where to store it when not in use. A few minor downsides: These are rechargeable devices and there's no charger in the box. It's just a standard micro USB charger that used to be used in cell phones - they're cheap and easy to get. So if you don't have an old phone charger, you'll have to spend a few more dollars. Since it's rechargeable, it will ONLY become "dead" if you don't use it for a long time, and if you're not careful, it will die in the process of working. I've found I can use it while charging, so keep the charger in a bag. Just a wire. Both devices were almost 100% charged upon delivery - at least according to the devices themselves. The manual is a little bit Chinese so it's a little fun to read. It is very important to understand that the main unit has 3 RJ45 connectors - and depending on what function you want to use, you need to use the right connector (in some cases you even need to use RJ45 when testing RJ11). I'm sure I'll learn this over time, but my testing showed that I wasn't always right at guessing which port to use. A little light or indicator on the plug would be REALLY good to indicate which one is active. Things I will NEVER use: ping No way am I going to hit 100 keys to get an IP address and everything to see if layer 3 is working.
