Review on 🍲 2-Quart Covered Double Boiler from Farberware's Classic Stainless Series by Badpuppy Warton

Not for my purpose

This is a great pot but unfortunately Farberware have changed the proportions of their steamer so the top half has a smaller portion of the pot that dangles just as much as the bottom half the previous versions. I wanted to modify it and repurpose it for use in a rice steamer, but this flatter top half won't work. Years ago I had a Comet Rice aluminum rice pan that I loved and decided I wanted a stainless steel version. I couldn't find it, but I did find a used Farberware classic steamer on eBay that we were able to use to build it. We did this by copying the Comet rice pot design: we drilled a series of holes all over the pot just below the middle rim in the top pot, so the holes were just below the rim of the bottom pot, and some steam from boiling water. in the lower pot rises the covered upper one. They also use some water with the rice in the top pot, but not as much as usual, and the rice cooks beautifully, never burns or sticks and can be cooked for a while afterward too. I love it! But it doesn't hold more than 1.5 cups of uncooked rice with the requisite water under the series of holes we drilled. Which is normal for us in most cases. I usually cook 1 cup of rice anyway. Then we got a new cooker that only has induction burners, and unfortunately the old Farberware rice steamer we built doesn't work with it. I was hoping to buy a new Farberware steamer that's suitable for induction so we can make a new rice pot. While this is a great steamer and would be perfect if it had the same configuration as the old pot, unfortunately it isn't. If we drilled holes for steaming just below the ledge where the top pot sits on top of the bottom pot, it wouldn't even fit 1 cup of rice and 1-1/2 cups of water before the water started pouring out of the holes. The water level must be below the holes. So not suitable for my purposes and I returned it. After that, after playing a little longer, I gave up and bought a small electric stove to continue using my old favorite Farberware steam rice cooker. I know there are rice steamers that are small gadgets, but I love my homemade pot!
