Spindles made of non-solid wood break easily

They are very useful, especially with new puppies to make a handle. I complain that they can't be folded in any direction, which is a bit of a nuisance when turning them into a handle, but my main complaint is that they (the spindles, at least) are made out of cheap MDF wood. My dog chewed through the plywood in about 5 seconds when left alone and it looks like cardboard underneath. I bought a few of these and will be getting them again anyway, but it would be much better if the spindles were solid wood. Especially for $50 a goal
