I bought a cheap dog collar and it was a total failure when dog 2 barked and dog 1 ripped the collar. I decided to try something more serious and found this. This "tool" is primarily for teaching hounds to serve, but we've used it to try to get our sheltie pal to stop barking as excessively (and a bit of obedience, like "come" is better). We have a 5 year old and a 2 year old and the 5 year old was teaching the 2 year old what to bark at. They barked at anything with a motor. Lawnmowers, vacuums, drills, you name it. Aluminum foil when getting in and out of the swim. They got out of control and the neighbors started complaining and they got kicked out of their dog play dates. Almost immediate improvement occurred in about 2 days. We started with the 280C (single) and quickly realized we needed to upgrade to dual. You must remember that this is a training tool to teach them to obey your VERBEL commands. I really like how the manual explains things and you can think of it as more of a leash tug than a punishment. Think of your dogs as having ADD and you need to get their attention with a (or stronger) tug. In fact if our dogs were on a leash they would be fine. So you can think of this tool as an extension of your freedom and not as something negative. Always start with a verbal command, if that fails try "Page" (vibration), if that fails try "Nick" (short slap), if that fails try "Continuous" (long Shock). The point of this advancement is to teach them to think that if they don't listen, there will be consequences. Do not contact Nick directly (unless you have already given him verbal and paging information). It's an easy trap to just climb to higher levels when you're panicking. But they won't know if you're contradictory. It's also nice that I realized that an automatic collar will never work, or to be honest. Each situation is a sentence. And the goal isn't to teach them never to bark. We teach them not to bark at stupid things. When they play and "speak", we let them bark. But if they bark because I opened the car door, that's unacceptable, especially if I told them not to. It is very important how tight the collar fits. Our dogs have thick, fluffy fur. DO NOT compensate with a higher level if it has poor contact. If he makes good contact, it won't be long. If you don't make good contact and turn it on, it will make intermittent contact and hit you harder than you should (it has happened and will happen until you find out). The site currently does its job 80% of the time, it requires 15% nic and 5% continuously. We believe it has to be awkwardly "adjacent" for reliable operation. They don't seem to care if it's comfortable. But it works much better when they fit snugly. Hopefully we can take the collar off them. Currently they behave MUCH better when turned on. And they don't seem too upset about it and sit down when it's time to put them on. It's like walking on a leash. We try to take it down as much as possible because it is heavy and needs to be neat. If we had to use collars forever, we would, but we hope that doesn't happen. Friends and neighbors immediately noticed a big difference, and they too are better off without a collar. But how long will that last if we never wear the collar again? We do not know. One thing I don't like is the dial to turn it on. It can bump up or down. Check it before Nick or Continuous every time. I scored on myself to know what I'm giving them. It's like a discharge of static electricity from a switch plate. It won't harm them. We operate it between 20-28 hours. Usually leave it at 20 Nick to be on the safe side. We often visit the lake and pool and it often got very wet. But when they go swimming, we try to take it off and not "drown" (although it probably is). It is clearly VERY high quality. It works more consistently when they are wet :) We didn't realize how bad it was and what we put in and all the yelling and barking until we had more control with this tool. I will try to continue this. Review. It was 2.5 weeks for us. wish us luck
