Basic handheld scanner

I bought this scanner hoping for a smart Windows 7 compatible solution to try to go paperless in my home office for personal documents. I have a Fujitsu ScanSnap with IRIScan software, which is great for fast, multi-page, high-quality direct-to-PDF scanning on Windows XP, but became obsolete almost immediately when Vista came out and proved to have terrible customer service . I also have an HP LaserJet All-In-One that produces excellent quality JPGs at very slow speeds. When IRIScan had a great sale, I tried out their new Scanner Anywhere 2. Pros: Portable: It scans without being plugged into a computer or wall. Dealing with the accumulated mail and other junk in our kitchen is great. - Compatibility: because the SD card can be pulled out and inserted into the card reader and the scanner can be connected to the computer. via USB and recognizes it as a USB stick, it is still useful when you change the operating system. - Software Compatibility: As advertised, the software runs on Windows 7 64-bit (as well as other operating systems). Cons: - Poor scan resolution. Although the JPG files are the same size as the files created for the same document on my HP scanner, the quality is much worse. When I print the document back, pixelation is clearly visible on it. The documents are still usable, but closer to a bad photocopy. Poor scan brightness. Documents printed and scanned on white paper have a gray background. Scanned images come out too dark to see all parts of the photo. The scan also shows every little crease on the sheet of paper. - Limit battery life. I fully charged the scanner, disconnected it from the network and started working with the accumulated mail. I scanned about 20 pages in 2-3 hours with the scanner automatically shutting down after timing out between scans. After 2 hours the scanner reported a low battery. The battery shouldn't draw too much power in standby mode, so it's safe to assume it'll only last 30 pages before the battery dies. Picky sheet feeders. If the edge of the paper is folded at all, it's incredibly difficult to force it to feed. And as you try to get the paper to hook, the wheels spin and the infeed accounts for that part of scanning the page. . So when a page finally snags after 2 seconds, it scans 2/3 of the page and then stops while the paper is still in the scanner. - Will not scan anything larger than 8 1/2 x 11. - No multi-page feeds - Noticeable delay (more than 10 seconds?) when saving one scan before starting the next - JPG to PDF (as well as Word and other formats) conversion software must be run document by document. The version that comes with my ScanSnap can be set to automatically convert any PDF file in the catalog to a PDF file with OCR and text search. It would be great if Iriscan Pro 12 had a similar Convert All option so that all the documents I scanned could be quickly converted to PDFs. the computer will help me do all the paperwork here. But it's a really bad replacement for the ScanSnap and I would never scan photos with it.
