May not be ready for prime time

I don't respond to much marketing emails, but we have many Kasa lightbulbs and sockets that connect to our Alexa-powered smart home system. I first tried it on a bunch of LED strings running around my garden, currently on an old school timer with a manual slide dimmer that works great. The Kasa switch would not connect to Wi-Fi, which seems to be a common problem with a 'smart' switch designed for outdoor use. It just didn't work. I then attempted to hook it up to a series of string lights surrounding our screen porch where we know Wi-Fi can reach so we can dim the dimmable LED lights. The setup we had featured a manual LED dimmer that plugged into a regular Kasa outlet switch, allowing us to turn the lights on and off with an Alexa command, but not control the dimming. Installation went pretty smoothly, but this switch failed to dim the LED lights. They can be 100%, something like 50%, something very low, or . Nothing. It was very snappy, like trying to use a dimmer without LEDs. And there was a significant lag in all functions, including just turning it on and off. I disabled it and went back to our old setup. I might try this device again later, but to be honest I doubt it will work for most people as an outdoor switch, which is its advertised purpose, because it simply won't pick up Wi-Fi from a single router can. At the very least, keep in mind that you might need a Wi-Fi extender to use it, and even then it's not the best choice for dimming LED lights, which it claims to be. I love Kasa products and the software seems to improve on a regular basis. Maybe they can fix something on their side to make this switch work as advertised. Until then, it's just not good enough for its intended purpose. Two slightly disappointed stars.
