Update 8-7-19: I went to the WD website to register my two drives. They are not covered by the WD warranty, presumably because they were purchased through a reseller. just so you know I use them as primary storage (and backup storage) for our MacBook Air laptop. Most MacBooks now ship with SSDs, which are memory chip-based drives rather than physical spinning disks. They're a lot more expensive than traditional physical drives, so the largest SSD we could get with our 2017 MacBook Air was 256GB. These (virtually enterprise-grade) WD Black drives are 500GB each, so our storage is double that of the onboard drive. We use one as our primary external drive; once a month we install the 2nd disk (also external), copy the files and put them in our safe at the bank. If we ever lose a drive due to an accident or injury or theft of our drive and laptop, we're only 30 days behind, which is a real benefit. The only downside to this drive is that the warranty on the drive itself is provided by the seller, OEMGENUINE. The disc was marked with a disc label stating a 5-year no-conditions seller warranty. An additional risk is that neither the seller nor WD have any warranty published on their website and any warranty provided is contingent on the seller's continued existence for the next 5 years. However, considering the price of the drive (around $35), it was a reasonable risk, especially since we bought two and used one as a backup for the main drive. The chance of losing two hard drives at the same time is pretty slim. So we took a chance but lowered the rating of the product and seller by 1 star. If you visit the WD website, they will list a 5 year limited warranty. I'm a bit surprised that WD's website doesn't have a link to their warranty. So if we can't contact OEMGENUINE with an issue, I'm not sure what kind of protection we get from WD. What should you pay attention to if it is important to you. These are fast drives (7200 RPM for a 500GB drive) that are significantly faster than previous bulk drives that we've purchased online and/or removed from existing systems, all of which were 5400 RPM. hard drives. SATA compatible, plug and play, no problems yet but only been a few days. If anything changes significantly, I'll post an update.
