Review on 🏡 Rockever Outdoor Cat Shelter: Rainproof Outside Kitty House with Escape Door - Protecting Your Feline Friend by Amber Chavez

Honest review with photos

As Mr. Lucky and I drove from sunny Southern California to terribly cold upstate New York, we didn't expect a few intruders to come into the house with us, but we did now all family And then there were seven more, but someone had to stay outside or I would have gone insane in my house. I bought a two story cat house and another smaller one and here we go - an honest cat ownership review. I ordered gray homes with white trim because the homeowners association (that would be me!) needed to match the human home. I read in Q&A that the houses were made of cedar. Well, they smell like cedar and that will go away in a few days. The seller told me they were weatherproof and made of fir, not cedar but fir - the seller is confused. This is not spruce, definitely not the spruce the deck is built from. I would say that this is a "shrub tree". This is a very light wood. If I called it balsa I'd be cruel so let's leave it. There are imperfections in the wood that need to be filled in, and sometimes a manufacturer will make a little "clay cake" on some of those imperfections. Photos added for review. Some of the wood is raw where it probably should be smooth, and some looks worse than my dull saw could have done on my worst day. You'll need to buy some wood filler and fill that in as well as any loosely tapered edges to allow the weather to get in between seams or where one piece of wood doesn't fit snugly against another. Cat houses are painted with a whisper of paint, and by whisper I mean the paint is so thin in places that the color of the wood overshadows the color of the paint. You need to buy good exterior paint if you want these houses to live on the street. I spent $40 for two liters (white and gray). Take the time to dress up with duct tape - add it to your shopping list, as will wooden spatulas when you travel to Lowes. I insulate my houses. The two story house was built for my four girls and they love it so I bought a smaller version as a companion for other Ferrals. Look, the first (two floors) wasn't of very good quality, but the smaller house was even worse, and when it comes to patching, masking, painting and quality. The smaller one has more moving parts. So if you have to choose between the larger or the smaller, ask yourself how much time you are willing to spend on prep work in the basement. In the pictures, pay attention to the pony in the acrylic window - who shot what? That's how it happened, and as you can see, quality control isn't "number one" at this plant. I thought the cats wouldn't mind. I have deadlines to put everything together with snow and snow coming so I kept this house even though I probably had to send it back for all of its flaws. As a painter, if you see crap in your paint, don't beat yourself up. That shit in the paint was before you painted it. Would I buy more? ONLY if it was sold at half price and I have the time and energy to spend a few days renovating such a shelter and preparing it for the outdoors. If the seller wants to run a contest and I win it for free, I will accept it. I would pick another two story house just because it's so much easier to put together than this crappy device. I will most likely get the needle if they fall apart. Turns out cats don't use both doors when they go in, so I'm not sure an escape door is really necessary.

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
  • Out of fashion
