Review on Accurate and Easy-to-Use General Tools 828 Digital Protractor for Precise Angle Measurements by Mario Bullard

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Cool tool. It could be better.

In use for a few months. At first I didn't think I would use it often, but in fact I use it almost every day. The house we are working on has walls and eaves that follow a curve so all the infill frames connecting them meet at a different angle and/or slope, requiring a bevel or bevel or compound bevel. This tool eliminates much of the math and steps involved in measuring an angle with an old-school protractor, tracing that angle on your material, and then aligning the saw or speed angle to find the exact degrees. With this tool properly calibrated, you can quickly measure an angle, often to within a few tenths of a degree, and quickly get to the cut. The cons of this tool are that 1) the self-zero function isn't quite right, more than a degree, and with mine I found a nice flat surface to zero it with. After calibration you can work with this setting for a while, but I reset it every time you put the blade in the hilt or after it's been sitting for a while. The blade sometimes turns in my pockets when I'm walking or working on other things. It doesn't matter as most of the time I just have to rummage through my pockets to find the parts and put it all back together. But I know there will come a day when I lose one of the parts and have to get a new one of these gauges or go back to old school while waiting for the new one. Overall I'm impressed. with this tool. It is easy to use and can save a lot of time. But its design can be slightly improved. I'm happy with the price at only $20, but I'd happily pay $10 or $20 more for one with a more accurate zeroing feature that also holds together better.

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • Requires outlet
