Review on πŸ”§ OTC Tools 5911A Drain Plug Pro Magnetic Remover: Easy Solution for Efficient Drain Plug Removal by Geoff Cooper

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great concept but a few issues

Removing the drain pan plug has always been a messy job. So I was hoping that this would make the oil change easier. The shaft is flexible yet stiff enough to get the job done. The magnet is very strong and works great. Almost perfect, but there are two issues that require a bit of practice. 1) The washer on the drain plug is usually made of a non-magnetic material. So it can very easily slip off the drain plug into the sump. I only change the washer occasionally, so in this case I have to dig through the used oil to find the washer. Be careful with the last few turns (when the oil overflows) and keep the drain plug in place to prevent this. 2) The magnet is very strong and the drain plug becomes part of the magnet when it is attached to the shaft. Once the plug comes out and touches the drain pan it will get stuck and it takes a good tug to get it out. causes the first problem when the washer slips off the plug and gets into the waste oil. The trick is to wait for the oil flow to slow down a bit, then grab the plug with your fingers and give it a sharp tug. In the end I thought it was a great tool but I was looking for something simpler. So I installed a Fumoto oil drain valve. So I don't expect this tool to be of much use in the future. However, if you have a drain plug in the future, with a little practice this is a great tool that could work well for you.
