Review on 🎡 iTrip Universal FM Transmitter and Charger for MP3 Players by Griffin Electronics by Edward Noble

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Disappointed: Portable Audio Video

The Griffin transmitter has a USB port for charging USB devices and is also configurable for international use, allowing the transmitter to transmit on 87.9, which is rare ( if any) frequency used here in the US. Although Soundfly AUX MP3 Player Auto FM Transmitter for SD Cards, USB Sticks, Mp3 Players (iPod, Zune, Sansa) with remote control (which I've had in the past) seemed to have slightly better transmit power - when I switched the Griffin to broadcast mono , it seemed to have about the same transmit power as the Soundfly. Mono is fine for most audiobooks, but certainly not ideal for songs. That being said, there were three main issues with the Griffin that prompted me to return it: 1. Setting the device to the international setting to use the 87.9 frequency caused the device to randomly switch to a different frequency when it was turned off and on again.2 . The device sent a large amount of interference when the air conditioner was turned on in the car. The unit also occasionally played a deep bass hum regardless of whether the air conditioning was on or off. The hum only goes away after power cycling the device (i.e. unplugging and turning the device back on since the device has no on/off switch).3. The device has an automatic switch-off function. So if you pause an MP3 track that's playing, the Griffin will turn off after a certain number of seconds of silence, and then the station you're broadcasting to suddenly turns on with a bunch of hiss (assuming you have your stereo volume turned up). I found this feature absolutely absurd since a person will often want to pause a recording (e.g. when answering a phone call). I could understand the auto-off feature for a battery-powered device, but for a device that draws power from the car's accessory port, it doesn't make sense to me. One note: after switching from international mode back to standard US mode, the auto power off feature seems to be disabled. I ditched the Griffin and ordered a more expensive Scosche digital FM transmitter and USB charger to try it out.
