Review on Garmin nüvi 205 Portable GPS Navigator - 3.5-Inch, Black by Kaylon Mackey

Great entry level GPS

For my first car GPS this is a great device. There are clear directions and advance notices, but no street names. It updated well with Garmin software and arrived with all 2009 maps already installed (thanks Revain). You can use it immediately (comes with brackets, car cable and a small manual). The main roads were correct but some local roads were not. My home address and street address are in the wrong place, but that is consistent with Mapquest and Google Maps. It also doesn't yell at you if you miss a turn; it simply recalculates the best alternative. In some cases the routing was a bit quirky (the AB route was different than the BA route), but this is new technology and still not where it should be. Every time I start it it takes less than 5-6 seconds to find satellites and I even have full power in my house. DEM cards are virtually useless unless heavily discounted. Speed limits on major roads are fairly accurate. Haven't tried going to photos or downloading points from google maps yet. One important element is missing - a USB cable. Without it, you cannot register your product (and get the latest firmware, software, maps, or Garmin accessories at a discount) or use all available features (free and paid add-ons, geocaching, etc.). ). It is unfortunate that this important little piece of the puzzle was overlooked. Other than that, this GPS does everything Garmin says it will. I preferred it to the TomTom 250 or Navigon 2100 device and I highly recommend it. Great price on Amazon too. 5 stars less than 1 because of missing USB cable.

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
  • Out of style
