The item was not properly pre-packaged.
It seems that the remote control was pulled upside down on a rough surface, the plastic bag in which it was rubbed in these places. The bubble wrap it came in was undamaged so there were scratches on the bottom of the remote before it was placed in the envelope. Seems to work well, time will tell how long it lasts compared to the original that came with the TV.
