Review on Sulky 88203 Iron Transfer Black Sewing by Tara Ford

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Very thick heavily pigmented lines

I bought these pens to help me transfer patterns or designs onto fabric for embroidery/stitching. The pens are easy to use and fairly easy to transfer (just be careful not to move the fabric or transfer during the ironing process) but I found the lines too thick and dark after transferring. They were difficult to hide behind the seams. I was hoping the pins would leave a thin or lighter outline on the fabric so I could cover the lines with the stitches I made with embroidery floss over them. In an attempt to solve this problem, I tried using only the tip of the marker/pen when translating, but even then the line would be thick and sharp. Also, I tried playing with different ironing times hoping this would help create fainter lines. This only partially transferred the pattern in a few places, meaning it doesn't carry over to the entire design. In these cases I had to iron the pattern onto the fabric again over the same spot, risking ruining the design if my second iron attempt wasn't 100% perfect. In general, it was easier for me to just draw. my designs directly onto the fabric with a vanishing ink pen (one of those water-soluble fabric pens) when I embroider. I wish Sulky had made their transfer pens in lighter colors (light blue, light pink, grey) because it would be easier to work on designs on paper than on the fabric itself.

Pros
  • sewing
Cons
  • boring packaging
