I put the 1/4' pad under a 9x12 Persian rug over hardwood. Between when I put the pad down and when I actually wrestled the rug into place, the kid played with Gravitrax on it and our French bulldog occasionally cavorted on it. It pilled up in little tufts here and there, but did not suffer any meaningful damage. When the rug went down, it held in place well, and the kid was overjoyed at the thickness (he plays a lot of physical Nintendo Switch games like Just Dance in there). Very happy I spent the extra for this; it is wildly superior to the thin, cheap rug gripper it replaced.This is one of those things like mattresses, where they last a long time and you use them all the time, and you know you will never find yourself thinking "I spent too much for this rug pad." I'm definitely glad I didn't cheap out.
