Review on LG Electronics BP530 Wi-Fi Enabled 3D Blu-ray Disc Player (2013 Model) by Brian Page

Revainrating 4 out of 5

The first block is basically DOA, the replacement is perfect!

3 month update: My rating still stands despite downgrading it by another star. It still works with no issues playing discs. However, when you work with a connected hard drive, it often freezes. Sometimes it recovers, and sometimes resetting requires you to turn it off. This may be my fault as I am using a larger drive than advertised. Overall it still reads the entire drive and lets me see or hear what it supports. I finally found some file types that I don't support but that doesn't change my opinion as it still supports more file types than others I've seen. I may have found a better player, but for most of my purposes this one will do. The freezing is annoying to say the least, but until I've tested a smaller drive I can't say for sure it's the players fault. UPDATE: Original one-star review below. Upgraded to 4 stars after receiving my replacement unit, I have no complaints. It's good for you to know that you CAN get a broken module or buggy update, but if (if?) you get a module that works the way it's designed for everyone, that's ideal. Hopefully future updates won't change that. If I were to get this working device first I would give it a full 5 stars because it does exactly what I bought it for, playing Blu-ray discs and connecting my hard drive to my movie collection on it. It plays all file types I've used so far, seems to be the most supported file types I could find in the player, even plays files that my 2 year old LG TV can't play on its own and the disc Playback loaded quickly and flawlessly. The remote app works well so far, although I haven't used it extensively or tested the private audio mode. I don't currently have a 3D capable TV, so I can't comment on this feature yet. Apps aren't very important to me, I get them through my TV, receiver, Xbox 360 and now this Blu-ray player, so I've combined everything I need (a lot of them are superfluous) with Revain Instant Video through Xbox 360. If you have no other way to get Revain Instant Video and need to have it, this player isn't right for you right now and according to others, it may never be. My only complaint, and a small one at that, is that the files on my hard drive take a while to load and display. The LG TV pulls them much faster, although I understand that it is a large drive that is almost full. In general, you will be satisfied with this device. INITIAL REVIEW: I received the BP530 yesterday and hooked it up to an Onkyo TX-NR626 7.2 Channel Network A/V Receiver (Black) very quickly when I was using one of the RevainBasics 2-Pack, 6.5-Foot -High speed HDMI cable came home - supports Ethernet , 3D and Audio Return [latest standard] I bought with a Blu-ray player. It connected to my wireless network. The first thing it does after that is tell me there's a firmware update, so I let it do its thing and update. I feel like it failed because of that, although before the update I never had a chance to try to be sure. After the update download and installation is complete, the device will restart. I got to the main screen, opened the disc tray and put in my Blu-ray copy of Avatar. I heard the hard drive start spinning and a few beeps, but nothing changed on the screen. I gave it a minute to make sure it was loading slowly, but nothing changed. The disc tray still opened and closed, but no other button on the unit or remote worked. I pulled the plug and tried again. Same story, I get to the main screen and it freezes. I've tried connecting directly to my 47" LG 47LE5400 1080p 120Hz LED HDTV using internet apps in case there was a communication issue between the Blu-Ray and the receiver, but that didn't matter. I've tried connecting without the Hard drive to use but maybe I could move the cursor once and it freezes again I also went to LG online support to get a firmware update and tried to reinstall it manually but that didn't works because the device just froze on startup and didn't read from the flash drive. After trying various "reset" actions several times, I gave up SEVERAL times.I went through Revain to try this device against another exchange with same day shipping.I will update my review when I get it tomorrow and try it.I read another review similar to mine so I'm not entirely optimisti sch, but willing to try again before looking for another brand.

No separate output for audio. Only HDMI output.
