The thermometer uses galistane (because of this, it is also sometimes called a halistane thermometer). It is denser than mercury, because of this it needs to be shaken harder, this is perhaps the only negative. Galistan is a mixture of three metals: gallium, indium and tin in a certain strictly specified proportion. These metals have low toxicity and are quite harmless to humans.
