They''re little pieces of rubber with a slit in them. The hourglass shape works well to keep them where you want them relative to the cable and frame. They seem pretty durable to this point. I only needed one where my rear derailleur cable contacts the chainstay on my road bike. They may be a little bit expensive for what they are, but when you need them... Not much else to say other than recommended.
