Review on Tenda N301 Wi-Fi Router: Quick πŸ“Ά & Easy Setup, up to 300Mbps Speed by Joseph Cvetkovic

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Good coverage but limited IOT support

I have this router (Tenda AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit Smart WiFi Router) in the 2nd ft. The router covers about 80% of the house huh is pretty good; The signal breaks through multiple walls to achieve this coverage. (If I could place it on the ground floor closer to the center of the house, I suspect it could cover the whole house.) However, the claim that you "can connect up to 35 wireless devices at a time" appears to be dead wrong. I have close to 100 IoT devices at home (mostly Wi-Fi switches, but a ton of other stuff - cameras, thermostats, garage door openers - pretty much everything except toilets can be controlled over WiFi, and toilets could be next). This router appears to "outperform" about 20 devices. You can pair more to the router - I've got just over 30 devices connected - but sustained connectivity seems to drop when you get past 20. And unlike other routers, when it starts dropping devices it seems to reset EVERYTHING. (I still have 2 devices connected, I don't know why). I started moving devices to another router; As soon as I dropped below 20 devices on Tenda, the connection became stable. It's been a few days now and I haven't seen any devices fall; that's with about 18 connected IoT devices. So if you are planning to buy this router to cover a large volume with a small number of clients (phones, laptops, etc.), this is a pretty good router. But if you plan to use it for IoT devices and need to "connect up to 35 wireless devices simultaneously," don't expect to get the advertised performance. A pretty good router though.

Pros
  • Great for a small house
Cons
  • Can't remember
