Provides adequate security in low risk areas. By this I mean that the product will adequately protect your bike in places where a potential thief might be unprepared. For example, if you ride your bike to school, the most likely thief is another student. This person is unlikely to carry the tools needed to cut a wire or pick a lock. However, this lock is not suitable for use in high crime areas where the thief is more likely to carry bolt cutters and lock picks. Any bolt cutter will cut through the cable quickly. The locking cylinder can also be opened by any trained person. Use a strong U-lock with a tubular cylinder for risk areas. A solid U-lock is harder to cut. A standard hardware store hacksaw will have trouble cutting through a strong padlock. And to open a tubular lock, you need a set of expensive special tools. Pay attention to the threat level and spend accordingly. This is a very inexpensive lock that will fit more than just your child's bike in the elementary/middle school bike rack. You probably wouldn't send your kid to school on a $2,000 mountain bike, would you? I would have no hesitation in using this product to protect a $300-$600 bike used in a low crime area.
