but of course I need to know more about the thickness of the ribbon

Full disclosure: I don't understand at all what thickness of ribbons there are in the world. I figured that the combination of the recognizable brand (Scotch) and their decision to label this product Heavy Duty would result in the packaging tape meeting my definition of Heavy Duty. I was wrong. I see positive reviews from other customers and I understand that my review may be due to being misinformed. That being said, this tape is flimsy which makes it VERY difficult to pick up the edge as you start the reel and beyond. difficult if you make the mistake of leaving the leading edge stuck in the reel. I'm sure this is technically inaccurate, but this wrapping paper feels just as thick to the touch as the "adhesive tape" used to attach wrapping paper. If you have ever lost a leading edge on a reel you have experienced what I experienced with this product. This product will do, but of course I need to know more about the thickness of the tape. I needed a material that would hold the bottom of a box in place well enough in one pass to send a gift or return a purchase of reasonable weight. In particular, I wanted to replicate the type of tape I previously bought from U-Haul to secure packing boxes when moving. Now I see that Scotch offers industrial/commercial grade packing tape. Maybe that's what I'm looking for.
