I've been looking for something that can withstand underwater, sand and mud for an ATV for a long time and finally settled on this one. This is my first time owning or even using a winch but I followed the instructions strictly knowing they are easy to break. The first thing that struck me was how difficult it was to pull the cord out so it wouldn't snag on itself when it let go of the cord. There seemed to be too much wire on the spool. The second time I used it, it came back on its own, wearing the cord down until it got dirty. I probably should have spent the extra $ to get synthetic cord instead. I noticed that if I pulled something heavy, it would pull for about 5 seconds and then stop. Then after 10-15 seconds it starts again. I'm assuming the thermal switch tripped. But for a boosted power unit, I really don't think this should happen. Each time I pull maybe 1000lbs with some extra resistance (stuck in mud etc.). After trying to get the guy out of the mud a few days ago, he just stopped working together after dragging him halfway in. Now I have to diagnose what's going on and probably only take it out after probably 5 uses in 6 months. As this is my first winch I really have no comparison but maybe it's a bad unit?
