Review on Milwaukee Vented Leather Chaps Medium by Steve Walton

Great leather, weak stitching

I love these guys so much I have 2 pairs. The first pair I bought was a large size, which is the size I usually buy these things in. The big ones were too big for me. I recommend buying 2 sizes smaller than you think you need. As a 5ft 10in, 150lb male, I wear these XS socks. On both of my stockings, old and new, the bottom feels too loose and comes off after a few rides. Reinforce the stitching later and add extra cash to an already expensive purchase. All chaps are the same length, so the wearer needs to cut them to the right length. There is a reinforcement seam at the bottom of the chaps where you can trim deeper without trimming undoing the rest of the seams, but even as a 5'10" human I had to cut over the built in reinforcement seam. If I could add something to these pieces, it would be a few reinforcement stitches on the side seams to allow more room for custom length adjustments without having to go to a leatherworker. There is no skin behind the plastic to compromise foot-to-road protection in a fall. My guess is that the part of the leg under the reflective strip (however small) will come loose in a sliding fall. Reflective material should be sewn over the skin, not replace it. In addition, when your bike's exhaust is hot, it will melt the reflective material and plastic stitching that attaches it to the skin. The leather present is of high quality and very thick, approximately 1/4 inch thick. This product contains no faux leather, except for minimal reflective plastic material on the bottom of the legs. Many expensive types and cheap non-brands have very thin skins that are easily torn by hand. These affordable, quality versions (including some Harley-Davidson brands) are designed more for beauty than to act as an effective barrier between your skin and the road in the event of falls and slips. Needless to say, despite the above quirks, these guys will get the job they were designed to do; They serve as an effective second skin when riding.
