Use them in a closet and At entry from my garage with the light switch on the opposite end of the hall. Batteries haven't needed to be recharged yet, lasting longer than expected.they come on when you expect them to.UPDATE I've owned these just over a year now, and I've only had to charge reach of them twice (they probably each come on about four times a day). Moving out and leaving them behind for the next tenants and will order again at our new place if there's any place that needs lighting without a handy outlet.
