Batteries haven't needed to be recharged yet, lasting longer than expected.they come on when you expect them to.UPDATE I've owned these just over a year now, and I've only had to charge reach of them twice (they probably each come on about four times a day). Moving out and leaving them behind for the next tenants and will order again at our new place if there's any place that needs lighting without a handy outlet.
