Review on πŸ”§ Precision Self-Centering Dowel Jig Kit - Doweling Jig with Drilling Guide Set by Jim Raju

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Not perfectly centered - Off by 1/16+

Disappointed that it doesn't seem to be more accurate than the $15 HF version. The center lines (notches) on the sides of the holes do not line up with the center of the hole (see illustration and hole marking at right). Also, holes drilled through threaded drill guides are not centered. If you tighten the jig on the board you can see that it is not perfectly centered. It's hard to pull. It feels like the thread is rough due to threading. It seems to you that it is taut and weakens as you drill. I put some dry silicone on the threads hoping it would improve the situation but not yet. Here are the guidelines for usage. Score your own marks centered with holes. Make sure the orientation stays the same when moving from one board to another. Practice with lots of pieces and you'll see what I mean. Since the holes are 1/16"+ off-center, it's possible to align the template on the two pieces so that that 1/16 off-center is the same on both pieces. However, this takes practice and you need to be careful, otherwise you'll have a lot sanding. While the template can help if you pay very close attention to it and practice with it, it is NOT self-centering for perfect alignment. This is not a product to pay more for, get a cheaper version as a guide and pay close attention thereon.
