Great cheap binoculars. Ideal for small children.

My great-nephew is very smart and at the age of four and a half he's already quite a big guy. and he likes to go camping with mom and dad so I wanted to get him some binoculars of his own. Also, he's the type who likes hard hits, so I figured the binoculars should be able to withstand a lot of wear and tear. The first thing I looked at was the Kidwinz Shock Proof 8x21 children's binoculars, beautifully designed. but several reviews pointed to their propensity for fairly easy breakage due to the all-plastic body construction. Kidwinz so I ordered a pair. Unfortunately, when they arrived I found that they were so badly calibrated that they became unusable and I sent them back. I have been an amateur astronomer for over six decades and have owned a vintage Celestron C8 telescope in the past. Forty years later I finally settled on the ultra-reliable Celestron brand with these Outland 8x25s. As it turned out, it was the perfect choice. Their collimation is accurate and daytime images are bright and clear. The central focus knob rotates smoothly and with the right amount of friction. The diopter adjustment for the right eye is much tighter than for the central focus. This is good because it means that once adjusted, it will retain that adjustment during normal binocular use. some kind of protection against dust and fingerprints. I have had several very high quality binoculars as well as some budget binoculars and I don't recall ever seeing this feature on any of them. , is a brilliant solution to the problem of allowing a young child to use "good" binoculars. Accidentally or intentionally, most children will inevitably touch the front lens of a pair of binoculars they are attempting to use. The presence of these flat protective lenses simply means that an occasional light cleaning will never adversely affect the AR coatings on actual objective lenses. The all-aluminum construction of the Celestron Outland 8x25s is strong and precision-engineered, so folding or unfolding the two halves is smooth and secure. The rubber coating ensures a very secure hold. and offers a much more insulating bare-handed touch than a metal case, even in cold weather. One last thing I really appreciate is that the minimum interpupillary distance (IPD) on these 8x25s is a fairly narrow 56mm. making them very suitable for children. All in all, a great "beginner" binoculars for creative and adventurous kids. Highly recommended.
