Review on Sony STR DH790 7 2 Ch Receiver Vision by Dwayne Pore

Buyers beware of false claims

Let me start by saying that the video transmission quality is excellent, but if you expect to use this AV receiver in combination with a PC I would steer clear. You can use either HDR or 60 fps, but not both at the same time. Enabling HDR limits the refresh rate to 30Hz, which is crazy. Also, it only plays 4K at 60Hz, while 1440p is again capped at 30fps (whether HDR is enabled or not). My last receiver could handle 1440p at 60 fps, it could handle 4K/60 fps with HDR enabled; it can't. You have to say to yourself, maybe this is user error? No, I can still enable all of these settings on my TV, but ARC can only handle 2 channels via PCM playback. Well, this product brought my PC to its knees. which is more than capable of doing everything I've come to expect from a modern AV receiver. Also, the sound quality is a little muddy and gets stuck in an over-compressed state even with straight linear PCM, which is a shame as my Atmos setup was crystal clear with my previous setup. Immediately exchanged this product for a Yamaha equivalent as it so falsely promised what it could do. Only purchase this product if you do not intend to use a PC and plan to connect or stream to consoles. I thought it would be a great price for a cheap Atmos, but it is a cheap product that hardly lives up to the demands. that they bring up. This is my first review and I feel compelled to share my experience. The reason the 4K/60fps lock is so annoying is that most games can't hit 60fps at 4k, but they can at 1440p. The 30fps cap at 1440p literally burns that bridge filling that gap, making my RTX 2060 a full and absolute weight of paper. Wouldn't recommend it.
