Review on Enhance Your Editing Workflow with the Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor by Anthony Mangum

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great editing tool

I'd be impressed with this device, especially since it was practically free with the purchase of DaVinci Resolve Studio (rather than the free version which doesn't have the word Studio). I have a Shuttle Pro, but even though it's bigger, it almost replaces the keyboard. Actually, that's how it is, and you only need a mouse, but of course you always need a keyboard. The jog wheel is better and better than the old Shuttle Pro. This wheel seems to be a good weight and should have roller bearings. It's very smooth and has a nice free play when you click it. This is useful for fast scrolling or almost fast forwarding without jumping around with the mouse and timeline. The keys are the same as on a good keyboard, and some have alternate modes. There is a row of LEDs to indicate a function or setting. There's a learning curve, but thanks to some good videos around the web, we're picking up speed. Even on the bottom there are two long "feet strips" for traction on surfaces, not just the 4 corners like other devices. The feel is firm and heavy, but not too heavy, and the plastic is good. It definitely doesn't feel cheap. It comes with a USB 3.0 cable to connect to standard USB or USB 3.0 on your computer. One thing I didn't know when ordering is that this is also a Bluetooth keyboard with built-in batteries. It's a great feature that may or may not be used (we love what's plugged in here), but you have to worry about overcharging if it's plugged in all the time. Our system doesn't (and didn't need) a Bluetooth receiver, but they're cheap enough to add as a card or USB dongle. I'm sure we will, as overcharging can't be dangerous (aside from reducing battery life), but only because the cable that comes with it is the standard length of a phone cord, and we could sometimes use a longer length. . There is a lot of confusion as to whether this speed editor comes with a DaVinci Studio key, and yes it does. If you buy one of these without it, you're wrong. Black Magic basically gives you a speed editor when you buy Resolve Studio (17 - latest version), and that includes free updates if you have the key. I even asked for this list in the Questions and Answers section and someone said they didn't. Luckily the seller said it was, so we made the purchase. The key comes in a separate software shell that even has an SD card with Resolve Studio installed on it. This is great for those whose systems are not exposed to the internet for security reasons and who are installing from HDD, SD or their own network. Again, this isn't required for our purpose, but it's nice to see it's included. All in all, for the same price as Resolve Studio, it was great to buy. Highly recommended but yes, out of print in many places due to the impact of COVID on production.

Pros
  • I have my fingers crossed
Cons
  • I've been waiting for this for a long time
