I bought this as extra filtration for my 40 gallon goldfish tank. I use a large sponge filter there, but I also wanted something to put the filter carbon and biocarrier in and it was perfect for that. If you want to use it as the only filter, it works for up to 10 gallon tanks or for roasts. Mine was hooked up to an old Tetra Whisper pump and pumped more water than I expected. It's a simple filter, but it works well. However, it is noisy. It doesn't have an air stone, so you get these huge bubbles that make a lot of noise. Instead, I recommend the Lee Triple Flow box filter. It's very similar, but it has an air stone so the bubble flow is much quieter.
