An inexpensive way to get your key fob working again.

Purchased (2 pieces) to fix broken buttons on a GM key fob. There are sellers of the same item at a lower price but they had a terrible 2-3 week delivery time (it happened in two days). There are several ways to repair or replace the key fob at prices well below retail prices. I decided to use my existing circuit board as it still worked in the broken key fob. Opening an old key fob to remove the electronics is not a problem. If you decide to have the supplied blank cut out at a hardware store or dealership, your only task is to fit the old circuit board into the new case (be careful as the battery cables can be easily removed). If you decide to use your old key this is a bit more complicated and requires a key change and unfortunately the old key will not fit in the new housing so the old key and new key will have to be separated from their respective key holders (the metal part , to which the key is attached). ) and the old key is inserted into the new holder. This job requires a good 1/16 punch to knock out the roll pin that locks the key in the holder (new holder/old key) and assemble it. Spring in place, key and two case halves, rotating the case to "preload" the spring, and then with the circuit board in place, the battery springs securely engaged, slide the two halves together. No-brainer ha ha ha. I fixed two $16 keychains and they work great. Destroyed a cheap stamp and had to borrow a good stamp but that was a real problem. The quality of the case is okay and the plastic and chrome key holder are exact replicas. The inner keypads are identical. The battery terminals are a little less secure than the original GMs (had to use one of the old ones in one of the new cases so keep all your parts until you complete the task). The biggest noticeable difference is that 1). The trigger and key holder are different and the old key will not work in the new case without doing the above mentioned tape and the interchangeable logo is in a new case, not the same as the original but nice). Armed with a miniature Phillips head screwdriver, a good pair of magnifying glasses or magnifying glasses, a hole punch and a small hammer, and a hard surface like a vise with a small hole in it to push the pin out. .

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • Almost everything is fine
