Review on πŸ”’ Buffalo AirStation Pro Dual Band Gigabit PoE Wireless Access Point 802.11n (WAPS-APG600H) by Peter Joseph

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Extremely limited range, limited speed.

In many ways the AGP-600H is a good wireless access point, except for the most important part: wireless access. The range is extremely limited. If you are within five meters of the device and have visual contact, it works quite well. At a distance of more than five meters the signal level drops dramatically, at a distance of 30 meters it disappears even with line of sight. If something comes between you and the device, even a piece of wood or glass, the signal strength drops even faster and the range is significantly reduced. Compared to the Netgear AC-1750, the WLAN performance is very disappointing. I compared the signal strength to the AC-1750 in the same environment and the Netgear product delivers 3-6dB more signal at the same distances and is not as sensitive to obstacles. In fact, the AC-1750 delivers a better signal over twice the distance and through obstacles than the AGP-600H in direct line of sight. Speed tests are also disappointing. With an 802.11n radio, the AGP-600H can only transmit around 3 Mbps, while the AC-1750 can transmit 6 Mbps. This was tested on a 15Mbps uplink so both results are disappointing as 802.11n has to support around 100Mbps. But the AGP-600H is more disappointing. The AGP-600H's setup menu can be used, but detailed settings are difficult to find, and the unit comes without a detailed manual or software required for initial setup, which must be downloaded from a server in Taiwan . I will be keeping this device because I need POE capability, but am frustrated with having to run so many extra cables to get the AP close enough to coverage to work. and get such a small coverage area and limited data rate from a relatively expensive device.
