Polishing is about what "normal " should be

PRW pumps have good reviews for flow characteristics so I settled on one to rebuild my Mercruiser. A few notes: a) The base plate is a thick flat steel plate with a cadmium (or cadmium-like - I thought they phased out that process) coating. I was hoping to replace it with a stainless steel plate from my original Mercruiser pump, but the holes are knurled differently - the patterns don't match. The base plate is attached with stainless steel hexagonal screws. b) The cast iron PRW impeller fills the internal cavity well - a tight fit should contribute to the claimed good flow characteristics c) I chose the "polished" version as small. ish cost increase. Polishing is appropriate and suitable for a "working" engine. The polisher focused on the surfaces visible after installation, leaving the back cast. There were a few not-so-smooth edges, such as around the outline of the sculpted PRW logo. The bags tended to be a little wavy. I spend a little time fixing the worst bugs, but that's just me. d) There is only one pump in the box. Fastening screws, gaskets, heating connections must be supplied separately. Overall, this pump features state-of-the-art manufacturing economics that shouldn't detract from its functionality and I have no regrets about choosing this pump. I'm comfortable with the above as part of my engine build to make it look and run "good" but not like a showpiece.
