I received a mattress as a gift when I bought it. I trusted this product after spilling red wine on my bed and not a drop fell on the mattress. Then I had children and bought one for each of their cribs. I've never had a problem with anything (urine, vomit, drinks) soiling a mattress. You must follow the washing instructions. That's what the clerk at the mattress store told me. Apparently if you dry it at too high a temperature it will disintegrate and not be effective. I try to wash and dry in the morning. I've had mine for 4 years now and it still works great. Update: My son is now 6 years old and still keeps crashing at night. This protector no longer keeps the mattress dry due to the increased volume of urine. I still have one on my bed and my daughter's bed and have found that if you spill something quickly it doesn't leak. However, if the child urinates profusely in the bed and does not wake up to change beds, then there is a leak. I wrapped the bed in plastic and put it on top of the plastic. I have changed my rating from 5 to 3 stars
