Something similar to the factory
Definitely suitable for attaching kayak holders (J-hooks). I had one of the brackets scratched, but no one noticed. Everything fits together well. The color goes well with the roof rails, so it looks like it came from the factory. As for the design choice, I'm not sure the bars are slightly angled (maybe the factory bars are that way too? not sure). After all it does what the factory does but for 1/3 the price so I'm happy. Make sure you mount with Loctite as recommended in the instructions.
