They are very well made. I bought a pair to see if I could use them on my car and SUV. I believe they will work well for both. For a car, these are without a doubt the ones they should be. For an ATV they might be a little small on a steep hill with less than firm ground, but that's a minor thing; Large pads are available for trucks. The ropes are easily knotted and can break unintentionally. It is a problem that you can glue or melt the rope to fuse it. There is a washer on the inside of the bars to keep the ropes from falling out as long as they remain knotted which is a great feature. I'll leave things as is as I see a desire to separate the bars or replace the rope with a longer one. I don't seem to mention the smell - good if you bury your nose in it. it smells like rubber. I bought rubber leggings which were worse. They might smell if you put them in a hot trunk or rear cargo area in the summer - time will tell. When that happens, I just put them in a plastic bag. I think I'll probably buy another pair.
