I use these as a work mat to avoid damaging delicate surfaces when working on projects around the boat. That works great. It's thick enough to provide some cushioning for the underlying surface and I don't have to worry about putting a flashlight or soldering iron on it. It also seems to be taking a while. I also use it to catch chips when drilling or grinding anything which makes cleaning easier. Just be careful which side you use for chips and always keep that side up.
