I first bought this for my 96 year old father who sometimes had trouble with spilling drinks. It's amazing: if you lift it *straight up*, it will rise. If you hit him from the side, he'll stay in place. Does not affect the surface it is on (does not scratch). By the way, it works best on *smooth* surfaces, not porous or textured ones. So, fast forward, my fabulous father passed away. I have a medical condition that sometimes makes me clumsy. One of the first things I bought for my table was this mug. I smile at the memory of my father. And of course I don't spill coffee on the keyboard. Hooray. A win-win situation.
