Edit July 2020 - Have been playing this thing fairly regularly after reading this review and decided to upgrade. A nasty thing that happened recently is the B button getting stuck which makes the gameplay brutal. I don't know how that could have happened as I've never dropped it or spilled anything on it. You really don't want to take it apart to find out what's going on with the button membrane. But I gave it another star for build quality. Battery life is also short when using standard AA rechargeable batteries. Quick Overview: 1. The PDA itself comes fully assembled, but you still need to install the Raspberry Pi in the cartridge shell and install the OS/software and ROM.2. If you're unfamiliar with the Raspberry Pi, or small electronics in general, you're likely to have trouble with this one. If you can follow the online tutorial, everything is fine. Pros: Looks good and looks solid. The d-pad and buttons work well, although I wish the buttons were arranged differently. It's a little awkward to hold at times, depending on what type of game you're playing. Honestly, it would be better if this thing was the REAL size of the original Gameboy. Works great emulating all 8 and 16 bit consoles. Decent screen for its size. The games look good, although small text is sometimes difficult to read, and I have excellent eyesight and don't need glasses or contacts. So if your eyesight is questionable, it can be REALLY difficult to read the text. I've tried different layouts for Retropie and while some are better than others, it's still difficult to read small text. Cons: Some noise in speakers and headphones. Not the worst I've tried, but noticeable. Inconvenient button placement. The text is difficult to read. There are no analog controllers, although this thing still isn't powerful enough to play most PS1 and N64 games. No battery? That means you either have to use the included crappy power cord or buy rechargeable batteries. The power cord keeps disconnecting from the console and ruining my games. Thing is about 12 inches long and replacements that are longer are NOT easy to find. Dpad is a bit small. Works great but needs to be a bit bigger for a more comfortable game. Feels spongy at times, but overall it's bearable. The shoulder buttons on the back have a nice feel but are oddly placed, making them difficult to hold comfortably depending on the game. Finally, for the price, this is a decent retropie PDA if you really want a PDA that looks like that old gray box you had as a kid but takes hours to assemble, configure, and install everything you need , and that's when you really know what you're doing in terms of Reteopia consoles. If not, you will feel bad. ๐Honestly, for the price and what you get, the RG350 would be a more solid choice at a similar price point. It has two counterparts and supports more consoles, although the menus aren't as clutter-free as Retropie builds. But the main bonus is that you don't have to assemble the RG350 - it's all down to personal preference and skill level.
