Works as advertised; some doubts about reliability

I like this machine. It works well, works great in my situation. Installation Installation was relatively easy. I have experience in installing electrical appliances - sockets, switches, lamps. Installation requires *roughly* the same complexity. I say "about" because it's a bit more complicated: you need access to the line, and that's more likely when installing new equipment or when working in a garage with a bare ceiling. My biggest concern is how the cables connect to the device. Most of us are used to the familiar reliable connections of the 3-pin 110/120 plug. You can just insert the stripped wires from the back and they will automatically pinch, or you can use a #2 Phillips screwdriver to pinch the wires. This device does not match that experience. The device's unobtrusive design is part of the problem. The lines enter the lower part of the device (from the side of the ceiling) and immediately turn 90 degrees. Immediately means within 1/4 inch. There is a clamping device for the neutral and hot lines and for the load. There is no mutual grounding. Due to the small footprint, the terminal screws are tiny. I needed a special small (tiny!) Phillips head screwdriver to tighten the screws. _feeling_ was also an issue; It took me a few tries to make sure the lines were attached properly. This is again due to the low altitude. And I had to install a neutral jumper with a wire nut (not included) in a small space. Due to the new mount configuration, I'm wondering if this unit meets electrical codes in most states. I'm no expert, but the connections aren't of the caliber of most devices I've installed at home. The code is there for a reason - consistency ensures long-term security, even under unusual circumstances. I wonder how reliable these connections will be during concussions or even normal home shifts. Performance The device works great. Once installed, it works like a charm. Now when I drive the car into the garage, the two LED strips switch on automatically. That makes it much safer in the evening when I get out of the car. It does exactly what I wanted. It's easy to set up, but again, you'll need a tiny screwdriver to make these adjustments. The instructions clearly show how it works and what the 2 controls do for you. Structure The device makes a well-built impression. The circuit board is well attached and the case is pretty solid. It's just too small. The device has a 1 year guarantee! And it's amazing. I don't expect to have to replace wired electronics in a year. If I need to replace it I will use a different device. However, this will be an issue as I cut the leads short enough to accommodate the "low profile" of THIS unit. Any device with a lower profile will require longer lines.

Pros
  • One year trial version
Cons
  • Available in white only
