I purchased this shadow box to create a gift. It is a good size for creating a miniature scene. The depth allows for 3-4 layers, if needed. My scene was a barn, and I had a roof, walls, barn door. After that there was still a good space left for foreground items. I also added lighting, and had to drill a 3/4" hole to allow access to the power switch. The hole did not affect the sturdiness. I also, had to hammer some tacks into the frame to hold the lights, again the frame was very sturdy.I dont know what kind of wood this is made from. It has a very strong scent when you first remove it from the packaging. The strong scent returned when I drilled into it. Just a side note to those who may be sensitive to strong scents.
