Good when it works - GPS modules for golf courses

I bought this in December 2007. When it works, it's great to have on the field. But I had problems with that. 1) The cable you use to charge it and use it to sync with your computer to download courses is difficult to connect. You have to work on it. 2) Initially, I often had problems connecting to satellites and getting readings on the course. Then suddenly, say on the 13th hole, he would come alive. This problem seemed to occur on cloudy days. However, earlier this year (2009) SkyGolf released a software update that greatly improved performance. I no longer have this problem. 3) Now the unit is not recognized by my computer and SkyGolf says I need to send it in for a $35-$100 repair. It cost over $300 to buy and I have to pay $30 a year to download the courses. If it fails in a year and a half and you have to pay up to $100 to fix it, that seems like quite a deal. reliable device. UPDATE July 2010: Although SkyGolf told me I would have to pay up to $100 to have it repaired, I was actually not charged for the repair. So I think it's excellent customer service. (I believe the problem was caused by one of their software updates, so it's only fitting that they didn't charge me). for an annual subscription fee, or abandon the SG4 entirely and buy another GPS module with no annual fee. Based on my experience with the SG4 I would probably give it 3 stars.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • Hard to say
