Review on Nikon Mirrorless Digital 10 30Mm PD ZOOM by Darrell Bridges

Great photos but one fatal flaw

I bought this camera as a compromise between two others I own: a D5300 with a set of lenses and a point and shoot camera. Since my wife uses the D5300 for product photography, it's quite difficult to take it off the rig and back on. While the point-and-shoot system is good, it's clear that the quality of the shots falls far short of that of a DSLR. So a good camera with good portability was the need of the hour. Enter J5. I bought the version with a 10-100mm lens and the photos are beautiful, with a variety of settings - bright light, low light, portraits, landscapes, etc. But there was one rather horrible bug. I noticed that some of the photos we took had a shadow on the bottom half. At first I thought the shadow was the photographer's head, cast by the light from behind. So I changed the position and retake the photo, but there was no difference. After some experimentation I figured out what the problem was: the 10-100mm lens is quite large and the camera's built-in flash is weak. So when we take a photo with flash, the shadow from the lens will be cast on the bottom of the subject. I assume smaller lenses won't have this problem as the lens doesn't interfere with the flash. With large lenses, however, this will be a major hurdle in flash photography. I've been looking for external flashes to solve this problem, but aside from disabling the compact camera somewhat, I haven't been able to find any such mount either (not to mention I can't see any place to attach a flash). .

Pros
  • cool product
Cons
  • a bit shabby
