They worked great on the tailgate of a 1997 Astro van. It's actually easy to replace them. Before installing, match the new piston to the old one. You will see that the ring remains on top of the old piston (because the new piston doesn't have one). These instructions are for a 1997 Astro. I assume this will work for other years. Note. UP and DOWN indicate that the sunroof is closed. TOP means connection to the VAN. LOWER means connection to the HATCH DOOR. Remove the old one: Using a flathead screwdriver, remove the locking ring from the BOTTOM connector and remove the BOTTOM connector from the connector. Then unscrew the TOP link from the socket. Install the new one: Screw the UP connector into the old UP ring, then snap the LOWER connector onto the fitting. Repeat the same for the other piston. Luke, because even with the old pistons that don't seem to work, they still offer some support. In other words, you remove the old piston, the hatch becomes heavier.
