Excellent! Better than expected!

I bought these in the hope that my experience wouldn't be the same as some who have claimed some pretty horrific (and explosive) results. All 5 units ordered were set to the same 5.0v output voltage and worked exactly as expected. They are used in some new devices and now with more confidence. For those buying things that might need to be "actively tuned" for efficiency or safety, I would suggest a 50 ohm 10 watt output resistor, and I used a current-limiting desktop power supply to test them . This adds a safety measure that not everyone can replicate, but a pull-up resistor sinks the output when the voltage rises. Since I've limited the input it wouldn't be possible to blast the >1 amp required to operate at 60 volts. A series input resistance causes the same limitation. A few words on ripple, RFI and such: It's the "old trick" to drive a switching power supply about 1.8-2 volts higher than you need, and then a 3-pin regulator (even an LM317T) to use to get the final required tension. These are pretty good low pass filters (below 100kHz) and inexpensive too. I have used this technique in critical medical equipment where noise can negatively impact performance. This can be very helpful together with a good EMC/RFI layout and marshalling. These little cubes are awesome and perfect when you can pay attention to the details of an electrical project to make "everything" work.

Pros
  • Confident
Cons
  • Out of Style
