Suspicious software

I was never able to try the scanner because activation of the software requires a serial number that does not come with the product. Of course you can go to their website, submit your information and collect all their cookies to join their club and activate the software. Instructions for using the scanner are vague and written in typically sloppy English at best. The instructions don't say how to format or how to set the timestamp. Worst of all, they don't let you know about a serial number issue until you download the software and think you're ready to try it. Then you need to activate the software. Read Eula carefully. Section 11.1 says something about letting them do whatever they want with their documents - at least that's what I've read - and somehow see them. The scanner is made in China, but I think the software is in Russian. A recent episode of 60 Minutes talked about how the Chinese would like to get all of our data. And you know what the Russians do. I was very suspicious of the whole process of joining their site and decided not to do it. I returned the item quickly.
