We have a red-eared turtle. its water is always dirty. I got this to try and cut down on all those two week water changes or cleanings. now i just sucked the debris and other shards out of the smooth glass - we removed the rocks and stuff from the tank beforehand - so relatively easy - the suction power isn't very strong here - you can't get a finger in the nozzle, but there will be small pieces of food and small stones. Now when this happens there is a return port on the side with filters that throw the water back. It filters out all small particles like food scraps and feces. It takes a minute to erase everything, so be patient and just go in a linear pattern - straight lines and vertical crosses, not just jumping around
